5ookms South of Alice Springs is Uluru (formerly know as Ayers Rock) This is the real Aussie icon as well as one of the natural wonders of the world. It is a real spectacle rising 348 metres high when flatness overwhelms the rest of the landscape surrounding. And that is only the tip of the iceberg (pun intended). The visible portion of the rock is only one third of the actual rock. The remaining two thirds lies underground.
The sun setting on the rock brings on some amazing colours, It begins with a yellow hue, Then orange, turning a brilliant red, burnt orange and eventually charcoal. It is easy to understand the aboriginals spiritual connection with this sight, The sight of the enormous rock, the soft winds whispering aross a flat plane, the soft golden grasses shining in the sunlight, all add to the magic. We white fellas found it a magical place as well.
I could post a zillion postcard perfect photos of the many faces of Uluru however I will spare everyone and refrain. Instead you can see how bored as silly kids become when forced to look at a rock for too long.
