The aboriginal owners of Uluru ask tourists not to climb it however the Australian Parks (with a current 99 yr. lease) each day open the gates for climbers young and old, fit and unfit to attempt the challenge. We contemplated the disrespect to the indigenous owners' request but ultimately chose to climb. That adrenaline pumping climb and amazing views were too much to pass up. Our karma equalizer was to pick up any and all garbage on the way. Hopefully the gods will forgive us.
Traditionally Uluru was climbed by the young untried aboriginal men as a test. Women were forbidden. It was seen as a sacred place and one of proof.. The climb took us about three hours. Challenging and dangerous, Yes. but worth the experience.
It won't be long before a permanent closure of the climb will keep tourists away. To date 35 deaths have happened. The most common cause is heart attack, the second being a fall. A sacred place for all.
