Cairns to Cape York route is 1000kms (one way) of red dirt dust road, heavy corrugations and good old Aussie bush. Mobile coverage is splotchy at best. The road is pretty straight with a few road houses in route. Cows own the road and the odd brumby and kangaroo might happen across too. At Bramwell (about halfway) the road splits leaving the driver the option of the bypass road (which is bad), or the Old Telegraph Track (an exceptionally bad track). Leaving the caravan in Cairns and camping, we chose the latter option and this is where the real Cape York adventure really begins! (Stay tuned for future postings:)
It is a hardy lot of people that travel in these parts. Being covered head to toe with dirt, grit and sweat starts to go unnoticed. We made the trip up in three days stopping once to detour to the beautiful Chile Beach which fringes the Coral Sea to the east. The final stop was Seisia where we camped. At the end of each driving day my hands continued to vibrate as if still steering through kilometers of corrugations.
This adventure is a MUST-DO! Necessary equiptment is a really solid 4WD vehical.
