Monkey Mia

A crowd of people stood impatiently at the top of the beach combating flies in the early morning. The bantering of French, Spanish, Italian, various dialects of English, and other unidentified languages were amongst the voices. They and we, were all waiting the dolphin arrival at Monkey Mia one of the biggest draws to WA.
Like super heroes to the rescue the dolphins arrived in synchronized threes.  Like rehearsed professional actor the dolphins stopped right into the designated dolphin zone, right on time.
On cue from the interpreter, the audience was allowed to silently approach the water's edge. A lady with a microphone stood knee deep in front of the group and began to introduce each dolphin by name, family, and history.  Two lucky people were pulled from the crowd and allowed to enter the water. Each were allowed to feed one fish to a dolphin. The dolphins then slipped away into the deep waters.
The Monkey Mia experience lost it's charm in the first hour.  The hour long ramblings of the dolphin lady was a barrage of don'ts, nos, and reminders of what not-to-do mixed with dry dolphin facts. We felt like primary school-aged children being scolded by a teacher with the patronizing reminders of the obvious.

No doubt these creatures are the most charming animals and deservedly termed amazing, but the people management/tourist trap atmosphere at Monkey Mia was anything but amazing. This could- have-been-amazing experience....over rated.  We did get some nice dolphin photos though.
