Cairns-What is the Hype?

If you were to pick a place to enjoy a luxurious resorty holiday or even one chalked full of night clubs and boozing, Cairns would be a great choice. The urban sprawl and endless choices of franchised hotels, restaurants, bars, and super stores is astonishing.  It screams "Tourist Here" with it's zillions of high rise hotels lining the esplanade. And hey,...even if it doesn't actually  have a ocean  for swimming  cause of the croc infested waters then why not check out the  super crowded public swimming lagoon which is frequented by the zillions of backpackers that can't afford the high rise upmarket hotels.  For kids, Cairns wins the Mackers award with what seems like more McDonald's restaurants in one town then anywhere else in route to date.
Cairns is not every ones cup of tea nor is it ours. Other then the beautiful tropical fruit available at the local markets and a refueling spot, the real draw here is the Great Barrier Reef.  But..the truth be know,... the GBF (termed by locals) is better seen from Cooktown and  Port Douglas. Cairns is over marketed and generic.

Best thing about Cairns was a meeting with a high school friend after 20 + years.  We had a yammer over a few drinks at a seaside restaurant in the tropical warmth. Priceless moment.
