Mary River NT

The Mary River runs through some of the Northern Territory's best wetlands. It is located just about halfway between Darwin and Kakadu on the Arnham Land Hwy.  Most tourists don't bother stopping here. The hordes continue onto Kakadu which leaves the Mary River to the adventurist few. The landscape, wildlife, and adventure meter rates at the highest in our book.
We accessed this beautiful, wild region via  Mary River Houseboat rentals.  It allows access to the entire river at your leisure. The next few posts will show our two night and three day trip through this amazing region.

Where the Barra live

The river winds through some lush tropical jungle areas then reaches out to it's flat- as -a -pancake lands and flood planes. Bird life and insect life is abundant...as well as the crocs.
.
Mossies are found in plague proportions in the evenings and command a description that are indescribable by words (or at least in my vocab). Furthermore, they carry many of the tropical nasties like  Ross River Fever and Viral Encephalitis. All this can lead into a mossie paranoia hysteria. Insecticides quickly become the lesser of the two evils.

Floodplanes

A new respect. Full of huge salties this river commands attention.

Morning mist off the river  and sunrise brings the background slurping noise of the Barramundi.
