If you drive the beach for a bit more then an hour leaving Eurong you will see the spectacular ocean view along the eastern side of the island which leads you to the recluse Indian Head lookout. From here you can see sharks, dugongs, manta rays, fish and turtles on a good day but you must first challenge yourself with a climb.
Here is also where the real 4wd's and not so real are separated. The road turns inland and climbs up a hill to the pristine Champagne pools, a magical destination where sea meets beach and rocks. The road up is very DEEP sand and the uphill climb makes the path very challenging. You can sit and watch one car after another bog in attempts to climb the sand hill, a serious day of amusement for many. Some bring beach chairs and beer coolers and plant themselves a side this spot for the day watching the maniacs drive like mad bouncing over the uneven sand at unsafe speeds in attempt to make it up the hill.
We were one of those maniacs. Our first attempt we bogged. After digging ourselves out, reversing down the hill. we drove like mad over the sand, slightly uncontrolled, and made it to the top:) Below was the perfectly clear, magical Champagne Pools.
