We drove out of Wittenoom as the skies opened up and spat. With an option to back track 4okm and take the paved route, our adventure seeking Mr. M decided the seemingly short cut on the dirt track would take us by Millstream NP where we had planned to spend the night. What would have taken 2 short hours by paved road took us 7 hours on the dirt track. The road became wetter and wetter. We averaged 40km/hr. The four wheel drive saved us from bogging on many occasions. We were slipping and sliding everywhere. The red squishy dirt became even more soup like as the rains poured down. By the time we reach the turn off the Millstream (a further 19km) we had had enough of the outback experience for the day. It was night fall when we finally pulled into Karatha. It took $40 in coins and two long car washes to clean up. Never Again ! Lesson Learned.
